Remedial Hip-Hop Vocab 101

I thought that as a public service to my hip-hop niggas, I would start a series of posts to help correct some of the most frequently misused phrases that rappers use in their verses. I'm not talking necessarily about correcting grammar here; I got no problem with Ebonics. I'm talking about misuse of common phrases or concepts. As our first example, let's talk about "La Costra Nostra", as in:

The streets love me
See they named me coca
The Puerto Rican version of La Costra Nostra

- The Profit, Fat Joe

Now, we've heard this often in various rap songs - I think I remember Raekwon using the phrase - and in the late 90's, during the Mafioso-inspired phase of hip-hop, it was very prevalent. But the phrase is La Cosa Nostra, not "costra". The phrase is Italian, and means "this thing of ours", and refers to the Italian Mafia. Maybe we can cut Raekwon some slack, but you would think that a Puerto Rican cat like Fat Joe would know better, since the Spanish pronunciation of the word "thing" is identical.

I hope this helps - using the correct terminology in your raps can make you seem smarter, and give you some credibility.

Debate 2007: 50 vs. Kanye

So the debate was cancelled. It's a shame - I would have loved to
hear their take on the issues. Really, though, 50 would have probably
won, since I'm sure he will have killed more people on his album than
Kanye, and also fucked and pimped more hos, while Kanye will have
only whined about how much of a tortured genius he is, and that he
really deserved a Grammy/Oscar/Emmy/BAFTA Award.

As it is, I'll be buying both albums, so in the end they're both
winners.
